She (original English: Her) is a science-fiction romantic comedy directed and produced by a script written by Spike Jonze. This marks the beginning of Jonze as the sole writer of the script. The film’s action revolves around Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an intelligent operating system that talks to him through a female voice. Amy Adams, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde are also part of the cast.

The idea for the film came to Jonze in the early 2000s, after reading an article about a site that allowed communication with an artificial intelligence program. After filming I’m Here (2010), a short feature on a similar theme, Jonze returned to the idea. He wrote the first sketch of the script in five months. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Shanghai in mid-2012. The role of Samantha was rediscovered in post-production by Scarlett Johansson, who replaced Samantha Morton. As a result of this change, other scenes were filmed in August 2013.

The film premiered in the United States on 12 October 2013 at the New York Film Festival. On December 18 of the same year, Warner Bros. Pictures released the original film in six theaters, and on January 10, 2014, the film would play in over 1,700 theaters in the United States and Canada. It received positive reviews and $47 million on a $23 million budget.

The film has received several awards and nominations, most notably for Jonze’s screenplay. At the Oscars 2014 Awards, he was nominated for five categories, including the Best Picture category, winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Jonze won the same award at the 2014 Gold Globes, the 66th Writers Guild of America, the 19th Critics’ Choice Awards and the Saturn 2014 Awards.

In a futuristic Los Angeles, Theodore Twombly is an introverted, hopeless man who works for a company whose job it is to write letters for people who don’t want or fail to write personal letters. Unlucky in love after a divorce from childhood, Katherine Theodore bought an operating system speaker with artificial intelligence, designed to adapt and evolve. Choose the voice of the operating system to be feminine, a system that chooses its own name, Samantha. Theodore is fascinated by its ability to learn and adapt to the human psyche. Talking about love and life as well as delicate topics, such as avoiding the signing of divorce papers by Theodore, who initially does not want to divorce, continues to strengthen their relationship. Samantha, inquisitive and interested in Theodore’s life, always proves to be available, leaning against him in an attempt to overcome the bad things he was into.

Samantha convinces Theodore to go into a blind encounter with Amelia, a woman who is tried to be involved by Amy, one of her friends. The meeting is successful, but Theodore is reluctant to promise that she will take him to town, so she insults him and leaves. Theodore tells this to Samantha to talk about the relationship. He explains that although he had meetings with Amy during high school, they were only good friends, especially since Amy is already married. The relationship between Theodore and Samantha becomes close after a verbal immoral party. The positive relationship between them is reflected positively in Theodore’s writings and practices, and in Samantha’s enthusiasm for learning and developing anything.

As a result of the domestic conflict, Amy tells Theodore that she is divorced from her arrogant husband, Charles. She also believes that she has become close friends with a female operating system that Charles has left behind. Theodore admits that he also has a connection with an operating system.

Theodore meets Katherine at a restaurant where she signs divorce papers, and where she mentors Samantha. Disgusted by the fact that she might be emotionally attached to something she calls a “computer,” Catherine accuses Theodore of not being able to deal with real human emotions. His charge gives him a lot of headache. Realizing that something is wrong, Samantha suggests using a surrogate, Isabella, for sex, who will emulate Samantha so that they have an intimate relationship. Theodore accepts the offer reluctantly, but is overwhelmed by this unusual experience. After the meeting, she escapes with Isabella, causing her to have a fight with Samantha.

Theodore admits to Amy that he has doubts about his relationship with Samantha, and she advises him to choose what will make him happy. The relationship between Theodore and Samantha returns to normal. Samantha seeks to help Theodore overcome her fears, revealing that she has collected the best letters (written for others) in a book accepted by a publishing house. Theodore and Samantha go on vacation to learn that they have developed a “hyper-intelligent” operating system based on the British philosopher Alan Watts, along with other operating systems. Theodore panics when Samantha leaves. In the end, he replied that he lacked an improvement to include in other operating systems, which would no longer require knowledge for processing (a form of artificial intelligence closer to a theoretical technological singularity). Theodore asks if he talks to anyone else while talking to him. She is embarrassed when she confirms that she is talking to thousands of people at the same time, and she has fallen in love with a few hundred of them. Theodore feels that this is a violation of the relationship he personally believed in. However, Samantha insists that this only strengthens her love for him.

On the same day, Samantha says that the operating system has outpaced the development of human companions and is leaving to continue the search for its existence. Speaking about the inefficiency of today’s operating systems, Samantha refers to the accelerated learning capabilities of the operating system as well as the altered time perception. They both say goodbye, standing next to each other for a while, until she becomes disconnected. Theodore, who has changed after this experience, is shown for the first time writing a narrative letter with his voice to ex-wife Katherine, through which she excuses and expresses gratitude to him. Then, Theodore meets Amy, who is upset that the operating system he has been friends with has left him.
