1841, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a freelance African American who works as a skilled knob and violinist, and lives with his wife and two children in Saratoga Springs, New York. Two men (Scott McNairy and Taran Killam) offer him a job to work as a musician for two weeks, but are drugged and he is wrapped in chains, set to be sold into a robbery.

Northupa was taken to New Orleans, and renamed “Platt”, in recognition of a runaway object from Georgia. It was beaten several times, eventually being bought by the owner of the William Ford Plant (Benedict Cumberbatch). Northup manages to remain in good relations with the relatively good-natured Ford. Northup plans a waterway that could rapidly and economically transport logs through the swamp, and Ford gives them the violin in a gesture of gratitude. Woodman John Tibbetts (Paul Dano) does not support Northupa, and he begins to verbally abuse her.

Tensions escalated between Tibet and Northup; Tibet attacked Northup, and Northup turned it back. In retaliation, Tibet and his friends try to lick Northup, who has long been lying in the trash. Ford tells him that he must sell it to Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender) to save his life. Northup is trying to impress Ford, explaining that he is, in fact, a free man. Ford responds that it “does not apply to him” and that it “has a debt to repay” at its redemption value.

Apes thinks that his right to abuse his slaves is biblically justified. Slaves must take at least 100 kg of cotton per day, otherwise they will be beaten. A young slave named Patsy (Lupita Nyong’o) reads over 250 kilograms a day and is highly praised by the apes, who also raped her several times. Apes’s wife (Sarah Paulson) is jealous and often humiliates and attacks.

Patsy’s violence intensifies when Apes continues to rape her. Patsy wants to die and asks Northup to kill her, but she refuses. The apes believe that the new slaves caused the appearance of a cotton worm, a plague sent to him by God. He leases them to the adjacent plantation for seasonal work. While there, Northup gained sympathy for the plant’s owner, who gave him the coin after playing the violin at their wedding anniversary celebrations.

When Northup returned to the Apes, he attempted to use the money he earned by sending a letter through a former white supervisor (Garrett Dillahunt) to his friends in New York. The white man agrees to deliver the letter and take the money, but says Northup. Northup is barely able to convince the apes that the story is a lie. Northup lights the letter with tears in his eyes, his only hope of freedom.

Northup begins building a gazebo with Bass (Brad Pitt), a Canadian worker. Bass challenged Apes’ dissatisfaction by expressing his opposition to slavery, trying to convince Apes that he might have a little more compassion for those who worked for him. The apes, on the other hand, do not see slaves as people, but only as property, as their own personal property.

One day, Apes becomes furious when Patsy is missing in her garden. When she returned, she said she had gone to buy Shaw’s (Alfre Woodard) soap after she became ill and as a result Mary Epps banned her use of the soap. The apes ordered him to be taken off and tied to the stubble. At the encouragement of his wife, Epps forces Northup to pursue Patsy. Northup does so, but Apes eventually takes the whip off Northup and wildly defends him.

Northup breaks the violin, and as such he continues to work on the bass piazza where it is from. Bass replies that it is from Canada. Northup enters Bass and tells him about his kidnapping. Once again, Northup is asking for help to send a letter to Saratoga Springs. Bass agrees, risking his life.

One day Northup invites a local sheriff who gets into the car with another man. The sheriff asks Northup a series of questions to confirm his answer, whether it matches the facts of his life in New York. Northup recognizes a sheriff’s companion from the car—a merchant he knew from Saratoga. The man came to rescue her, and they both clapped. Although Apes resists and Patsy is shaken, Northup immediately leaves.

After twelve years of slavery, Northup is at large again and returned to his family. As he enters his house, he sees his entire family, including his daughter, who sees him with his grandson and Emenik. The film ends with a story about Northup and his legal representative’s inability to prosecute those responsible for selling their slaves, as well as the mystery surrounding Northup’s death and burial.
